1. Use a jigsaw to cut away the collar on each atrium grate: On the largest grate, cut up to the tabs; on the others, cut the two bottommost sections only. Use a drill with a 3/16" bit to drill a hole in the bottom center of each grate. Use a 3/8" bit to drill through the center hole of the strainer dome cover. Sand the top of the dome and the interiors and exteriors of the grates with the sandpaper.
2. Spray the top of the dome and the insides of the grates with primer and let them dry. Spray the outsides of each with primer and let them dry. Repeat with the flat black paint, spraying the interiors of the grates first, followed by the exteriors.
3. Place the 6" grate right side up on a clean work surface. Set the top of a 4" grate on top of it, aligning the holes. Fasten the two together, pushing the bolt through the hole in the small grate and then through the larger one. Thread a washer onto the bolt end and then screw on the nut, using a Phillips-head screwdriver to fasten it tightly. Set aside. Place the second 4" grate right side up on the work surface. Set the top of the 3" grate on top of it, aligning the holes. Fasten the two together, pushing the bolt through the hole in the small grate and then through the larger one. Thread a washer onto the bolt end and then screw on the nut, using a Phillips-head screwdriver to fasten it tightly. Set the bottom of the base (the 6" and 4" pieces) on the work surface. Prepare a quarter-size mixture of the epoxy. Use a trimmed paint stirrer (see page 101) to apply a thin coat of the epoxy along the rim of the 4" grate. Set the other 4" grate on top of it, aligning the edges. Let the epoxy dry.
4. Assemble the socket kit, inserting the nipple of the socket into the center hole of the strainer dome cover (which essentially acts like a giant washer). Fasten it with the nut enclosed in the socket kit, using pliers to tighten it. Set aside. Thread the electric cord, exposed wires leading, up through the lamp base. Begin at the vertical openings of the base, snaking it up through the center openings of the other grates, and finally through the socket nipple. Connect the wires to the two terminals on the socket switch according to the package directions. Attach the switch to the base.
5. Prepare a dime-size mixture of epoxy. Use a trimmed paint stirrer to apply a thin bead of epoxy around the rim of the top grate. Set the strainer dome cover and socket on it, aligning the edges. Let the epoxy dry. Touch up the base with the flat black paint, if necessary
